I live in a small town in Surrey which is very close to a major University. It’s a lovely old building that has been there for hundreds of years. It really adds to the area in terms of beauty and history. Along with that building there are several other local land marks such as the Magna Carta and a War memorial which all add up to the area being really rather nice.

I have lived in the area for around 25 years in all, in the beginning with my parents and then when I met my wife we decided to buy a house in the area and stay put. You know, lovely historical place and nice a quiet too. We moved to a residential area which was mostly populated by elderly people who obviously took lots of pride in their houses. It didn’t matter if they were Council tenants they still looked after their gardens and wanted to keep everything nice and tidy. Unfortunately over time this has changed, these elderly people have moved on or passed away.
Now, normally you would expect for some of these houses to be bought for rental purposes and some of them to be bought by young families and such like. Well this is where the problems come in!! It seems to me that every house that has ever gone up for sale in my road has been bought by landlords for the express purpose of renting out to students. I mean, seriously, I think that approximately 10 -15 houses have been put up for sale for one reason or another over the last 5 years and EVERY ONE of them has been bought for rental. What does this mean for me and my street, well, it means that for 6-7 months of the year we have bundles and bundles of immature “only just out of short trousers” young adults invade our little town and for the other 5-6 months of the year the place is a ghost town.
More importantly (too me anyway) my street becomes a pass through for, not only the students that temporarily inhabit my road, but also the surrounding streets which are also full up with student lets. These young adults are obviously really excited about enjoying their new found freedom from mum and dad. It seems to me this means one thing….you know where I’m going here don’t you!!! Yep, you’ve guessed it, by consuming copious amounts of alcohol and no doubt drugs. They seem intent on making as much noise as possible, at the most unsuitable hour without any regard for their working neighbours. Pavements seem to be a thing of the past too, as they all seem to think that the middle of the road is the coolest place to walk, again with no regard for other road users. The unsocial behaviour just seems to get worse every year. Every year new set of students turn up who seem to be even more determined to ruin everything around them with absolutely no regard for anyone but themselves and their fun!!

If that wasn’t bad enough the road seems to be going to ruin too, a by product of student housing is messy, poorly maintained dirty houses. Obviously they don’t care about “boring” things like keeping the garden tidy, picking up rubbish and putting the bin away. That’s all too much like hard work and takes away time from sleeping and partying. The landlords of these houses are obviously only interested in keeping the places to a minimum standard of repair. No doubt some sort of legal responsibility.
All in all it isn’t very pleasant to live in my nice little, historical town anymore. So THANKS students, thanks for nothing!!!
